Resolute: one of Canada’s innovation leaders
For the seventh consecutive year, Resolute has been recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Corporate R&D Spenders. The annual ranking is prepared by Research Infosource Inc. and highlights Canada’s most innovative corporations. Some of Resolute’s innovative projects include: a pilot plant at our Thunder Bay (Ontario) facility to test and provide new pathways to the large-scale production of green bio-chemicals derived from wood; a project to deploy enzyme-enabled carbon capture technology at our Saint-Félicien (Quebec) pulp mill in partnership with CO2 Solutions; our wood pellet plant in Thunder Bay, which generates carbon-neutral renewable energy; and our joint venture with Mercer International to develop commercial applications for cellulose filaments, a new source of biomaterial made of wood fiber.
Governor’s Commendation for International Market Entry
West Virginia honors Fairmont mill for exporting to China
On November 4, 2017, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice and other officials recognized Resolute’s Fairmont mill for exporting recycled bleached kraft pulp to China. The annual commendation ceremony celebrates West Virginia companies for exporting their products to new countries and for helping to grow business in the state. In presenting Fairmont with the Governor’s Commendation for International Market Entry, Governor Justice thanked the Fairmont team for helping West Virginia compete in world markets and for exporting its highly valued and environmentally friendly products to Resolute’s expanding customer base in China.
AF&PA Leadership in Sustainability Award
Resolute recognized for energy efficiency/greenhouse gas reduction
On November 3, 2017, Resolute received an AF&PA Sustainability Award for our GHG reduction program. The company has adopted a series of ambitious sustainability commitments, including a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1 and 2) from our facilities by 65% between 2000 and 2015. By improving the energy efficiency of our operations and increasing the use of lower carbon fuels, we surpassed that goal. At the end of 2016, the company had lowered GHG emissions by 73% compared to 2000 levels. “A series of environmental commitments led Resolute to implement voluntary and pro-active improvements to drastically reduce GHG emissions from their facilities,” said AF&PA President and CEO Donna Harman.
Northwest Pulp & Paper Association
Ponderay wins 2017 environmental excellence award
On October 24, 2017, the Northwest Pulp & Paper Association (NWPPA) awarded the Ponderay Newsprint Company a 2017 Environmental Excellence Award for its sustained commitment to the environment. The Ponderay mill has successfully reduced its carbon emissions by 82%, and indirect carbon emissions by 77%, since 2000; meets 97% of its total electricity needs from environmentally friendly hydroelectric operations; and has reduced overall water consumption by more than 25% since 2010. Ponderay Newsprint Company, located in Usk (Washington), is a partnership between Resolute Forest Products and three leading U.S. newspaper companies. Resolute holds a 40% interest in the joint venture and is the managing partner for mill operations. The NWPPA represents pulp and paper mills and forestry companies in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry Awards
Calhoun mill honored in the energy excellence category
On October 23, 2017, our Calhoun pulp, paper and tissue operation was announced as the overall winner of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry’s 2017 Energy Excellence Award during its 35th Annual Environment and Energy Conference. In presenting the award, the Chamber highlighted Resolute’s investments in a modern continuous pulp digester and in the construction of a new state-of-the-art tissue facility at Calhoun, as well as several key sustainability achievements, such as the mill’s significantly reduced environmental footprint.
