Environmental Comparison Tools

Environmental Footprint Comparison Tool

Minimizing the environmental footprint of the forest products industry requires understanding the interactions among various performance metrics. Resolute Forest Products works with several difference organizations and platforms to assess the performance of its products and to provide comparative data to its stakeholders.

The National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) has developed the Environmental Footprint Comparison Tool (EFCT), a web-based information resource designed to help convey the challenges faced in simultaneously meeting a broad array of environmental objectives. This material is useful if you are looking to improve your environmental profile and you want to understand how one aspect (such as recycled content) may impact another environmental outcome (like greenhouse gas emissions). There are eight manufacturing-related subjects covered by the tool. The website has three levels of detail so that users can drill down to the level of information needed.

NCASI is an independent, non-profit research institute that focuses on environmental topics of interest to the forest products industry.

Environmental Paper Assessment Tool

Resolute also participates in the Environmental Paper Assessment Tool (EPAT), a membership-based online comparison tool that allows paper buyers to compare the eco-performance of their suppliers. EPAT captures mill-level data on environmental indicators (such as resource use and emissions), fiber sourcing and social criteria, providing a comprehensive "sustainability snapshot" of a paper producer. Upon request, our 2022 data is available via EPAT for our pulp and paper mills.

EPAT was developed by the sustainability non-profit organization GreenBlue in collaboration with leading paper buyers and suppliers, including Resolute. To find out more about EPAT, visit www.epat.org.

Publishers’ Database for Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing

Resolute is also a participant in the Book Chain Project, also known as the Publishers’ Database for Responsible Environmental Paper Sourcing (PREPS), an online tool to identify responsible paper supply chains for the textbooks used in schools, academic journals and other publications. Since 2010, Resolute has contributed data for many of its paper brands to this assessment tool, which helps 27 leading book and journal publishers, over 400 print suppliers, and more than 300 paper manufacturers make sustainable choices. Papers are awarded one, three or five stars based on fiber sourcing practices, as well as the pulp supply’s country of origin.

Our high ratings across our paper products assure customers that the wood fiber we use comes from responsible sources. This assurance is underscored by our adherence to the strict environmental and forestry laws and regulations in the United States and Canada, where we source virgin fiber, and the fact that 100% of our operations are CoC-certified.
